What actually happened
A record heatwave crossed Europe in late June 2026. The World Health Organization linked it to more than 1,300 excess deaths, with the heaviest toll among the elderly and those without shade or cool air. Temperature records fell across several countries during the week.
You have spent your whole life inside a mercy you never once noticed.
It is the cool of an ordinary room. The shadow of a wall at noon. The half-degree of moving air that crosses a doorway and touches the back of your neck. You did not earn it and you did not thank anyone for it, because it never occurred to you that it could be withdrawn. It was simply the temperature of being alive.
And then, for one week in June, across a whole continent, it lifted.
More than thirteen hundred people died. The World Health Organization counted the excess deaths across Europe from the twenty-first of June - around a thousand in France, hundreds more in Spain, the toll still moving as the days went on. Records fell in country after country: Spain and Portugal pushing toward forty-four degrees, half of France under its highest heat warning, the Czechs breaking their record two days running. Most of the dead did nothing differently. They were old, or alone, or simply in a room that would not cool, and the air they had breathed without a thought their entire lives became a thing they could not survive.
We read it as a weather story. A map shaded in red, a number that climbs, a warning to drink water and stay inside. And then we scroll on, back into the cool, and forget again.
The Qur'an would stop us here. Because it has a way of taking the things we never look at - the shade, the cool, the moving air - and naming them out loud, one by one, as gifts.
"And Allah has made for you shade out of what He has created, and has given you resorts in the mountains, and has given you garments to protect you from the heat, and garments to protect you from your violence. Thus He completes His blessings upon you, so that you may submit."

75Allah cites the example of a bonded slave, who has no power over anything; and someone to whom We have given plentiful provision, from which he gives secretly and openly. Are they equal in comparison? All praise belongs to Allah, but most of them do not know. 76And Allah cites the example of two men: one of them dumb, unable to do anything, and is a burden on his master; whichever way he directs him, he achieves nothing good. Is he equal to him who commands justice, and is on a straight path? 77To Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. The coming of the Hour is only as the twinkling of the eye, or even nearer. Allah has power over everything. 78Allah brought you out of your mothers’ wombs, not knowing anything; and He gave you the hearing, and the eyesight, and the brains; that you may give thanks. 79Have they not seen the birds, flying in the midst of the sky? None sustains them except Allah. In this are signs for people who believe. 80And Allah has given you in your homes habitats for you, and has provided for you out of the hides of livestock portable homes for you, so you can use them when you travel, and when you camp; and from their wool, and fur, and hair, furnishings and comfort for a while. 81And Allah has made for you shade out of what He has created, and has given you resorts in the mountains, and has given you garments to protect you from the heat, and garments to protect you from your violence. Thus He completes His blessings upon you, so that you may submit. 82But if they turn away, your only duty is clear communication. 83They recognize Allah’s blessing, but then deny it, as most of them are ungrateful.
Garments that protect you from the heat. Of all the things the verse could have lingered on, it stops on this one. The classical commentators noticed. Why name protection from the heat, asked al-Qurṭubī, when a garment shields a person from cold just the same? Because the Qur'an spoke first to a people who lived under a desert sun, for whom the heat was the enemy you felt every single day and the cold was the rare thing. The verse meets them exactly where their bodies already were - in the heat, reaching for shade. This June, a continent that had forgotten the desert's lesson was handed it back.
And look where the verse places the shade. Not as a fact of physics - the angle of a wall, the canopy of a tree - but as niʿma, a favour, deliberately given. Ibn Kathīr reads the shade here as the trees themselves, and the whole list - the homes, the mountain shelters, the clothes on your back - as Allah giving His servant exactly what the body needs to live, so that a person freed from the struggle to merely survive might turn, with the time and the ease he has been given, toward the One who gave it. The cool was never neutral. It was an argument. Thus He completes His blessings upon you.
But the verse is not standing alone, and this is the gift of reading the whole passage rather than the single line. A few breaths earlier, the same Sūra has been counting - patiently, almost tenderly - the favours a person uses every hour and never sees.
"Allah brought you out of your mothers' wombs, not knowing anything; and He gave you the hearing, and the eyesight, and the brains; that you may give thanks."

The hearing. The eyesight. The understanding. The bird held up in the open sky. The home that gives you quiet. And then the shade, and the garment against the heat. It is a single unbroken sentence of favours, and every one of them is a thing you have used today without a flicker of attention. That is the nature of niʿma. It is not the gift you asked for and remember receiving. It is the gift so constant, so woven into the floor of your life, that you mistake it for the way things simply are.
Until it thins. And then you feel it for the first time precisely as it fails - which is, the verse seems to say, a terribly late hour to start noticing.
The passage knows we are late. It says so, and it does not flinch from how strange the failure is.
"They recognize Allah's blessing, but then deny it, as most of them are ungrateful."

Read the order of it, because the order is the whole indictment. They recognise the blessing - then deny it. Not a people who never saw the gift. A people who saw it clearly, knew exactly where it came from, and turned away anyway. Ibn Kathīr puts it plainly: they know full well that Allah is the One who grants them every blessing, and still they deny it - living as though the cool and the provision and the breath simply belonged to them. That is not the sin of ignorance. It is the subtler thing the heatwave exposed in all of us: not that we never knew the shade was a mercy, but that we knew, and stood in it for years, and never once said thank you.
There is a second forgetting underneath the first, and the Qur'an names it too. It is the quiet confidence of people who believe they hold their own comfort in their hands.
"The likeness of the present life is this: water that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which the people and the animals eat. Until, when the earth puts on its fine appearance, and is beautified, and its inhabitants think that they have mastered it, Our command descends upon it by night or by day, and We turn it into stubble, as if it had not flourished the day before. We thus clarify the revelations for people who reflect."

24The likeness of the present life is this: water that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which the people and the animals eat. Until, when the earth puts on its fine appearance, and is beautified, and its inhabitants think that they have mastered it, Our command descends upon it by night or by day, and We turn it into stubble, as if it had not flourished the day before. We thus clarify the revelations for people who reflect.
Its inhabitants think that they have mastered it. That is the sentence to sit with. The field is green, the harvest is certain, the people who planted it look out over what they have made and feel, reasonably, in control. Ibn Kathīr describes the moment exactly: those who tilled the ground are sure they have the power to gather it in - and it is there, at the height of their confidence, that the command arrives, by night or by day, and the green becomes stubble. As if it had not flourished the day before. Qatāda glossed that closing phrase with a chill that lands harder this month: as if it had never been blessed at all.
We are the inhabitants who thought we had mastered it. A civilisation that air-conditioned itself out of the seasons, that set its thermostats and forgot the sky, that came to feel the temperature was a setting rather than a gift. One week of heat did not end us. But it did something quieter and more useful: it showed us the edge of our control, the precise place where our mastery thins out into mercy we did not provide and cannot command.
And here the Qur'an does the thing it always does. It does not leave us in the heat. The same Sūra that named the shade has already named the relief.
"Allah sends down water from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death. In this is a sign for people who listen."

65Allah sends down water from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death. In this is a sign for people who listen. 66And there is a lesson for you in cattle: We give you a drink from their bellies, from between waste and blood, pure milk, refreshing to the drinkers. 67And from the fruits of date-palms and grapevines, you derive sugar and wholesome food. In this is a sign for people who understand. 68And your Lord inspired the bee: “Set up hives in the mountains, and in the trees, and in what they construct.” 69Then eat of all the fruits, and go along the pathways of your Lord, with precision. From their bellies emerges a fluid of diverse colors, containing healing for the people. Surely in this is a sign for people who reflect.
The water that breaks a heatwave is not a weather system that happened to arrive. It is, the verse says, a sign - for the people who will listen. The same hand that let the shade thin sends down the rain that revives the dead ground. The lesson was never that the world is cruel. It was that the world is held - every cool morning of it - by Someone, and that the holding is so faithful we mistook it for nothing.
So what does gratitude actually ask, once the heat has shown us how much we were being given?
Not a feeling. Shukr is not the warm glow of counting your blessings from inside a cool room. The same passage that lists the favours seals each one with a purpose - that you may give thanks, so that you may submit - and submission is not a mood. It moves outward. If the shade is a mercy you were handed, then the people standing in the sun without it are your trust. The grandmother in the top-floor flat with no fan. The man laying tarmac at noon because the shift does not stop for the temperature. The family whose housing was never built for a heat like this. A society that recognises the blessing and then denies it is not only one that forgets to pray - it is one that lets the favour pool in the hands of those who already have it, and never reaches the exposed. To be grateful for shade, in any sense the Qur'an would accept, is to become shade for someone else. To check on them. To open the cool room. To build the city that does not leave its weakest in the heat.
And there is a guard to set here, carefully, before we go further. This is not a verse about punishment. The Qur'an does not hand us the right to look at thirteen hundred graves and read them as a verdict on the dead, or on a continent, or on anyone. Perhaps the heat is a sign; the believer says perhaps and stops there, because divine intent in a particular event is a door we are not given the key to. What the Qur'an states flatly is not who deserved what. It is the older, gentler thing: that the shade was always a gift, that the gift was always pointing somewhere, and that most of us were not looking.
So look now. While the room is cool again, before the forgetting closes back over.
Why did it take the loss of the shade to make you feel the shade? Why should the cool air have to fail before you call it a mercy? Why wait for the favour to thin before you let it turn you toward the One who never stopped giving it?
Feel the cool, the next time it crosses your neck in a doorway, and let it be a sign and not a setting. Thank the One who hung the shade where you stand. And then carry it - to the flat with no fan, to the worker in the sun, to whoever the heat will find first when it returns. Because it will return. And gratitude that never leaves the cool room was never gratitude at all.
"And Allah has made for you shade out of what He has created... Thus He completes His blessings upon you, so that you may submit."
You stood in it your whole life and called it nothing.
It was niʿma. It always was. And the One who completes His blessings upon you is only waiting for you to notice - and, having noticed, to become a shade for someone still standing in the sun.
